On Friendship: New and Geeky

I have a theory that at awkward mandatory moments in life it is EASY to make friends. Think about it… when you have to cram with fellow classmates before a test… when you are in a waiting room….if your plane is delayed…. or college orientation – You find yourself in one of these moments and happen upon someone else who feels as awkward or bored as you to endure the agony with, and suddenly you have made a friend. This week I made three of those. Friday was a spectacular day – maybe even fantabulous! (yes that is a word, look it up) I am a student of UT! I went to Orientation all day. There we were sitting in a huge hall waiting for things to begin and curiously looking over the ton of paperwork you were handed. (I think it was not until 1:30 that I heard any pertinent information!) Oh well. There were three girls there who were feeling nearly as out of place as me, so we sat near each other while waiting and ended up hanging out until registration time. We exchanged Myspace accounts and e-mail (my aren’t we modern?) and it made what would have been a “new kid at school” feeling into a much better circumstance. Hopefully that is the first of a bunch of good friends I’ll make at school – and witnessing opportunities!

I also have come to the realization that part of the reason I fit so well up here is that there are a bunch of people who have the same nerdy tastes as me. There are no less then 5 or 6 people at church who feel as excited as I do about Literature, LOTR, Star Wars, Superheroes…etc. –even including my secret love of J.K. Rowling! J That is so fun! I don’t think I’ve ever been around that many Christians who actually love to discuss college, Literature and what kind of superhero you’d be – but on the other hand they really love God and want to serve him. That is a huge blessing. Just makes me smile. A group of us went to see Superman Returns last night. It was SO fun and was a completely awesome movie! LOVED IT! But even more fun than that was going with a group of people I actually like who were as excited as me. That is far superior to going alone or with a movie critic. Glad to be able to just enjoy the little things.
